Stretching: The Crucial Thing Missing Your Workout

Source: Color Joy Stock

So you know to prioritize both cardio and strengthening, fit in a walk or yoga flow even when you don’t have time for a full workout, and eat nutritious food to help your body feel its best while exercising. But the one crucial part of a healthy fitness routine you might be neglecting? Stretching. Stretching is not just an excuse to nap in Savasana for five minutes or for impressing your friends by doing splits during a night out (looking at you, Kyle Richards).

Stretching keeps the body flexible, strong, and healthy. When your muscles are flexible, they’re able to maintain a range of motion to prevent injuries and improve both endurance and strength. In other words, a flexible body is a healthy body. Yes, we need to stretch to accompany our workouts, but we also need to stretch to relieve tension, counteract the effects of sitting all day, and improve the overall health of the body.

You don’t need to dedicate an hour a day or change your entire routine to stretch more. To prove it, we rounded up a list of obé Fitness stretching classes that range from a quick five-minute flow to a 30-minute sculpt workout that fits in the stretching for you. Whether you prefer to give your muscles some extra love during your morning routine, night routine, before a workout, after a workout, or throughout your workday, there’s an obé class for you. Scroll on to find the stretching sequence that appeals to you—your muscles can thank me later.

Recharge stretch

If you’re on your lunch break or taking a quick 10-minute break, this is the stretch for you. It’s meant to not only stretch out your entire body from head to toe but is also meant to energize you. Think of this stretch series as your 3 p.m. coffee alternative. Trust me, you won’t need a shot of espresso when you use this to treat your afternoon slump.

Warmup for runners

PSA to runners, joggers, and cardio-lovers: You need to be stretching. Not only is stretching before and after cardio workouts crucial in preventing injuries, but properly preparing your muscles can also help improve endurance and speed. Try this stretching warmup, whether you’re about to hit the treadmill or sprint on a track.

Calming morning flow

If mornings are your sacred time to prepare your mind and body for the day ahead, I got you. For those of us who prefer to wake up slowly and peacefully instead of rush right into a workout first thing in the morning, this flow will help center you and energize you after waking up while also providing you with calm energy to take on your day.

Hips and hamstring stretch

Picture this: You crushed a killer leg day yesterday and now it’s painful to walk. Or maybe you keep a lot of tension in your hips (guilty!), and your hamstrings and glutes are always tight. Look no further than this lower-body stretch, designed to gently open up your hips and stretch out the hamstrings.

Neck and upper back stretch

I get a lot of tension headaches, and after my doctor suggested the tension was coming from my neck, shoulders, and upper back, I started doing this five-minute neck and upper back stretch every day. Spoiler alert: My tension headaches went away. This is also good for tech neck (also guilty) or people who sit at a desk all day (AKA most of us).

Chair stretch

If you’re a seasoned stretcher who wants something that goes a little deeper than your normal body stretches (but without paying for fancy equipment you most likely won’t use), good news. All you need to get deeper and stretch every muscle group in the body is a chair. Grab the one from your office or a dining chair from the kitchen and give your muscles a little TLC.

Cool down stretch

By now, you know you need a dynamic stretch at the beginning of your workout to warm up, but it’s just as important to do a cool down stretch to help release and stretch out the muscles that just put in a lot of hard work. Whether you prefer jogging, barre, or yoga, try this cool down stretch after your workout of choice to prevent soreness and lengthen muscles.

Seated stretch

If you swear you don’t even have five minutes to spare during your busiest days, you can still fit in a good stretch to help your body feel its best. All of these stretches can be done at your desk. That’s right, you can get a full-body stretch in while sitting in your chair. Try these movements while transitioning between tasks at your desk or even while you’re in a Zoom meeting (but insider tip: turn your camera off).

Stretch and sculpt class

If you prefer stretching to be seamlessly incorporated into your workout or you only have 30 minutes a day to dedicate to your body, try this combo stretch and sculpt class. You’ll be toning and strengthening all the important muscle groups, and then stretching out what you just worked for lengthened muscles and a healthier body.

Full body stretch

Got 10 minutes to spare but don’t know where to start? This full body stretch goes through all the best basics to relieve tension and stretch out every muscle group in the body. Whether you’re wrapping up a workout, taking a lunch break, or just want to move your body for an extra 10 minutes throughout the day, give your entire body some TLC with these stretches.

Bedtime stretch

Certain stretches are the perfect way to wake up and energize the body, but other stretches can work to relax the body for your most peaceful night of sleep ever. These stretches improve your mobility and flexibility like other stretches, but the sequence is also designed to release tension from the body and leave you in a blissed out state by the end. Pro tip: Do these stretches in your PJs because you’re going to want to hop right into bed when you’re done.

Wine and unwind stretch

If I haven’t convinced you to stretch more yet, this will probably do it. Whether you just wrapped up a tough workday or you would never miss a happy hour, kill two birds with one stone by having your glass of wine while stretching the body.

Sure, this is just a regular series of amazing stretches you can do without wine at any time of day (or with any beverage of choice), but I like this idea of fitting in whatever feels best for you. It’s a good reminder that you don’t have to be on a yoga mat, have on your workout clothes, or be at the optimal time to get a stretch in. You can stretch whenever, wherever, and however feels best for you, so fit it in where you can and make it as enjoyable as possible (yes, even if that means with a glass of Pinot Noir).

Clara Hendler/Allure

'Tis the season to gift and glow. Lucky for you and your loved ones, we've curated an extra-special list of skin-care gift sets for the 2021 holiday season that cover both bases excellently. No matter who is on your list — or what their skin concerns may be — brightening, firming, hydrating, and blemish-busting kits are all accounted for. We even have sets for seasoned skin-care aficionados who love to talk about the wonders of niacinamide over eggnog, as well as newbies who you want to introduce to your favorite K-beauty brand.

To make these gifts a little more magical, most of these boxes contain a full-sized product with a price tag much less than if you were to gift it on its own. The skin-care gift sets also include adorable, mini jars and bottles of Best of Beauty Award winners, like the Kinship Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturizing Sunscreen in the Glow Squad 4-Step Healthy Skin Kit. You (or your friend or family member) can experiment with the products and see if your skin loves them as much as Allure editors do before committing to the standard sizes.

The fun kits below, including, but not limited to, the Glow Recipe Glossy Skin Spell Kit, Mario Badescu Cleanse & Hydrate Collection, and Drunk Elephant About Face Skin Kit, are packed with all our favorite creams, masks, and treatments. Everyone is sure to be well-stocked with the complexion essentials of their dreams as we embark on 2022.

All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

8 Halloween Activities You Can Do at Home

Source: @francois_et_moi

Year after year, Halloween has proven itself to be one of the most entertaining holidays of all time. From running around my neighborhood during my trick-or-treating prime to securing the title of fourth grade apple-bobbing champion to navigating my way out of a corn maze after a few too many hot toddies, I must say: I have a longstanding soft spot for spooky season.

Over time, my idea of fun has transformed a bit, and this year, nesting and partaking in at-home Halloween activities sounds ideal. If you don’t have Halloween plans (or if your inner introvert is avoiding them at all costs), fear not—these eight spooky activities will make celebrating at home that much better.

1. Make Halloween-themed snacks and desserts

There was a period in my life when my idea of a good time included binge-purchasing four costumes on Amazon to meet the needs of a college-fueled Halloween week. Now, I’ve crossed a threshold in my life where Halloween simply serves as an excuse to nest and bury myself in spooky-themed treats that I make in the comfort of my own home. What can I say? Life comes at you fast. This year, I’m going to tackle one of these equally cute and simple Halloween-themed treats to snap a pic of and promptly eat in one sitting.

2. Carve a pumpkin

Carving pumpkins might not be one of the most groundbreaking Halloween activities in the book, but year after year, it remains the most tried and true of them all. Pick a fresh pumpkin, opt for a design that’ll stop Michael Myers in his tracks, and award yourself some bonus points for cleaning and toasting your pumpkin seeds after. Whether you do this one by your lonesome or up the ante with a little friendly competition with a partner or roommate, you’ll have bought yourself a one-way ticket to nostalgic Halloween bliss.

3. Have a spooky movie marathon

Dim the lights, grab your popcorn, and prepare to be spooked. I can’t lie, my idea of spooked might just be a little different from yours (I’m more of a Sanderson Sister fan than a Freddy Krueger stan—I’ll truly never understand why people enjoy being scared), but regardless, I can get down with a spooky movie marathon that’ll get me in the mood for the season. Whether you prefer Halloween movies that help you recreate the sentimental joy of your childhood or the ones that frighten you to your core, it’ll be the at-home activity you look forward to checking off of your Halloween bucket list.

4. Buy and rank Trader Joe’s fall products

If there’s ever been an excuse to run to your nearest Trader Joe’s and absolutely clear out all of their seasonal items, Halloween is it. Trade in mediocre trick-or-treat Tootsie Rolls for a cart full of pumpkin-flavored goodness and thank us later. We can’t choose between the butternut squash mac and cheese or the cinnamon bun spread, so we say go to town—we won’t judge. Bring them home, make a spread TJ himself would envy, rank them until every item has been properly sampled and discussed, and promptly return to pick up more of your favs.

5. Make a D.I.Y. Halloween craft

If you’re anything like me, making D.I.Y. holiday crafts is a sure way to catapult yourself back into the blissful woes of the third grade. There was nothing quite like showing up to school in the costume you’d carefully selected from Party City, consuming record amounts of sugar, and focusing your sugar-induced high just long enough to assemble a popsicle stick spider web. While popsicle stick and pipe cleaner crafts always sound like a good time, these ones are sure to bring your craft game to the next level.

6. Watch a true-crime docuseries

As I previously mentioned, I’m not a person who typically likes to lose sleep fearing for my life post-horror movie, but for a good true-crime documentary or docuseries, I’ll make an exception. While true crime doesn’t really have a season, it only seems appropriate that we indulge in it a little more during the one time of year when being spooked to your core is considered commonplace. Lock your doors, grab your comfort blanket, and buckle up. These true crime documentaries will leave you feeling unsettled, to say the least.

7. Dive into the next thriller on your TBR list

There was a time in life when I really thought that I didn’t have the attention span for reading. Then, I fell into the world of thriller books that now has me in a chokehold. There’s something about a gripping, page-turning novel with high stakes that makes me teleport to another dimension and locks me in for hours on end. This Halloween, opt for one of these spooky thrillers that’ll keep you up far past the late-night hours of Oct. 31.

8. Indulge in some Halloween-themed cocktails

A festive excuse to make a not-so-average cocktail at home? You don’t have to tell us twice. This Halloween, bunker down at home with one of these boo-sy cocktails that’ll help spice up your at-home Halloween plans. Call it a “best-season-of-all-time celebration” or a “holiday season pregame.” Regardless of what we’re cheers-ing to, we’ll drink to that.

We Tried Beauty Products Celebrities Swear By

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Source: Getty Images

When a celebrity raves about a beauty product, I’m first in line to try. I’m typically a skeptic, refusing to believe something could be that much better than the items I’ve tried previously. But when recommendations stack up, I can’t help but need to get my hands on it. Celebrities have a unique take on beauty products: they’re often working with the best and brightest on their skin, hair, and makeup; they need products that work on camera and off, and they’re also mostly amateurs too—if a product is fussy, they’re not likely dealing with it. Basically, celebs are just like us, just with access to experts and thousands of dollars to spend on their beauty rituals.

I’m constantly researching celebrity favorite beauty products (both for my day job and as an expensive hobby), so it was only in due time that I’d start incorporating some of them into my routine to see if they’re actually worth the hype (and the high price tag).

Tatcha

The Camellia Cleansing Oil

Celebs who love it: Chloe Fineman, Halima Aden, Doja Cat

Celebrities need a luxurious, deep cleansing oil maybe more than the rest of us. All that makeup has to come off somehow. I finished off one of these cleansing oils and have been sitting on repurchasing for a while because it’s a bit of a splurge, but it’s so lovely to use and made me actually excited to take my makeup off at the end of the day. It made my skin feel soft and supple and removed every stitch of makeup—without giving me cloudy eyes.

iS Clinical

Cleansing Complex

Celebs who love it: Debra Messing, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tamera Mowry

My dermatologist recommended this to me endlessly, but it was seeing Rosie Huntington-Whitely use it that finally broke me down to buy it. Until this, I had never saw the importance of splurging on a cleanser. I used the CeraVe cleanser every beauty blogger told me to buy and went on my merry way. This is ideal for someone with acne-prone or oily skin who’s been burned by other acne cleansers that dried out their skin, because this somehow is deeply cleansing without stripping. It keeps acne at bay with a little bit of salicylic acid. I think this cleanser is fantastic, but I prefer Avene’s gel cleanser for half the price.

Biologique Recherche

Lotion P50 Exfoliating Toner

Celebs who love it: Chloe Fineman, Chriselle Lim, Tayshia Adams

With this toner, I see why celebrities have good skin. P50 is an exfoliating liquid that really follows the age-old adage “it gets worse before it gets better.” My skin looked atrocious the first few nights I used P50 (red, splotchy, broken out), but once that went away, it revealed brighter, smoother, softer skin I never knew I could see. It smells like feet, but I’ll take it.

Caudalie

Instant Detox Mask

Celebs who love it: Kourtney Kardashian, Danielle Brooks, Precious Lee

After seeing this mask blow up on TikTok, I picked it up at a rare time it was in stock, and now I can’t live without it. Unlike other clay masks, this doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight and waxy; it removes all the gunk from my pores without sacrificing my glow. I use it about a once a week in the evenings, and it’s made such a difference in the clogged pores and blackheads on my nose. They’re fewer and farther between since I started using this, and it helps clear and heal when I do have some.

La Mer

Moisturizing Soft Cream

Celebs who love it: Megan thee Stallion, Nina Dobrev, Kelsey Merritt

I indulged in the ultimate splurge last spring when I picked up a mini of this on a whim during my first in-store shopping excursion post-vaccine (oh, the days!). If the beauty industry can wear you down on one thing, it’s convincing you that La Mer’s moisturizing products are a 10/10. I used it a few times and quickly walked myself back to the store to return it. This is lovely and luxurious, for sure, but is it worth the high price? Not for me. I wanted something viscous and thick that would seal in everything at the end of my skincare routine and make my skin look plump and moisturized, and this just isn’t that. It’s lightweight and thinner than I wanted, so it doesn’t provide that deep moisture I was looking for. Ultimately, I ended up with Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore, which solved every problem for about half the price.

Armani Beauty

Luminous Silk Foundation

Celebs who love it: Lori Harvey, Barbara Palvin, Palmona Elsesser

We all have that product… you know, the one you try once and immediately know you’ll be indebted to paying that price tag until you die. For me, it’s Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk. I’ll eat the cost of this magic foundation as long as I’m around, and I won’t complain even a bit. Luminous Silk is unlike any other foundation I’ve ever tried. While “luminous” is in the name, it has a natural, skinlike finish that tows the perfectly-balanced line of being dewy without looking oily or unnatural. It has a buildable medium coverage that looks flawless when my skin is in good shape or when I’m suffering with a bad hormonal breakout. It never clings to dry patches, stays all day, and always has a shade that matches my olive undertones. The celebs got it right with this one.

Fenty Beauty

Instant Warmth Bronzer

Celebs who love it: Madison Beer, Cynthia Erivo, Doja Cat

Everyone needs a blendable, smooth bronzer in their collection that they can always count on, and Fenty Beauty’s is mine (and apparently a few others’ too). I know if I pack this for a trip, I can count on it to make me look sunkissed in a very natural way. I use a big, fluffy brush to apply it to the perimeter of my face, and it really just makes me look like I have a slight tan. The undertones and shades in this bronzer cover just about every skin tone, but it’s Fenty, so who’s surprised? I’ve hit pan on this and will have this in my collection for a long time.

Shop it now

Laura Mercier

Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Celebs who love it: Saweetie, Jhené Aiko, Doja Cat

Laura Mercier’s classic setting powder will forever reign supreme, and the celebs agree. It’s a lightweight, natural-looking powder that’s blurring and smoothing on the skin. It makes your makeup last double the length it would without it and looks good when my skin is dry or oily. I especially love that this comes in a few different shades, because we all know “translucent” isn’t translucent on everyone. On my medium skin tone, the “honey” shade blends away naturally without making me look grey and washed out.

Shop it now

Olaplex

No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme

Celebs who love it: Leslie Grace, Addison Rae, Camila Mendes

It wasn’t this product alone that nursed my damaged, broken, straggly hair back to life, but I’d give this about 75 percent of the credit. Olaplex contains a proprietary formula that strengthens, repairs, and smooths the bonds in your hair from the inside out, so your doesn’t just look healthier, it is. If you’re dying your hair often, using lots of heat, or spending a long time in the sun (celebrities are guilty of all three), this repairing leave-in conditioner will cure all that damage and prevent it from getting worse. It’s lightweight on your hair, and you only need the tiniest amount, so this container lasts truly forever.

Travis Barker Just Got Kourtney Kardashian’s Lips Tattooed on His Arm

NEW YORK NEW YORK SEPTEMBER 12 Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker attend the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards at...Getty Images

Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian are still celebrating their engagement (as they should).

While Kardashian is posing romantic topless pics on Instagram showing off her gorgeous ring, the Blink-182 drummer just added yet another permanent tribute to his fiancée onto his body. On October 24, Barker shared an imprint of the Poosh mogul's lips on Instagram Stories. Hours later, tattoo artist Scott Campbell posted the final results on Barker's arm to his Instagram, along with a massive scorpion.

"Scorpio season. On @travisbarker," the artist captioned the image. "Lips straight from the mouth of @kourtneykardash. Congrats you two." Yes, born on November 14, Barker is a certified Scorpio. We love a man who believes in astrology.

Kourtney Kardashian shared the news of their engagement earlier this month with a series of photos of Travis Barker's beachy proposal featuring an abundance of candles and red roses. She captioned the photos, "Forever," which matches what Barker replied with in her comments section (as well as the caption on his own engagement post).

According to TMZ, the proposal happened on Sunday, October 17, at a hotel in Montecito, California. A source told Entertainment Tonight that the location was a sentimental choice. "The proposal took place on the beach at the Rosewood Miramar Beach hotel, where Kourtney and Travis have spent a lot of time together and is considered to be a very special and sacred place to them," the source said. "Their families are beyond happy and excited for them too. Their kids are very much looking forward to being an official big happy family."

A few days after their initial announcement, Kardashian shared even more pics from the big day with the caption, "I woke up all night thinking it was a dream." Barker replied, "Forever with you is a dream come true."

These Aerie Pieces Will Level-up Your Loungewear Collection

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Source: Aerie

While most people have been busy building capsule wardrobes and always curating chic, minimalistic outfits, I’ve been focusing on one specific portion of my closet: loungewear. And after about a year of building my collection, when I look through my drawers dedicated to comfy clothes, there is one brand that takes up much more space than all the rest: Aerie. Their sweatshirts, hoodies, joggers, athleisure pieces, and more are top tier when it comes to clothing that is out-of-this-world comfortable yet doesn’t break the bank.

And now that I have adapted to working from home full time, I spend most of my days wearing comfy clothes, and I need to like them. Instead of pretending to be something I’m not and wearing jeans while sitting at my desk that’s three feet away from my bed (I’m sorry, I just can’t do it), I prefer to wear elevated loungewear that makes me feel put together but is still super comfortable. After all, I have never met a matching set that I didn’t like. Put one on with a claw clip and chunky gold hoops and you’ve got yourself the perfect lazy-girl-chic look.

Keep scrolling for 30 of the best cozy pieces from Aerie that will take your loungewear collection to the next level.

How To Copy the Best Looks From ‘When Harry Met Sally’

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

When Harry met Sally, not only did their banter-filled friendship begin, but so did a series of iconic fashion moments. The tweed blazers, fisherman knits, and bowler hats commanded (almost) as much attention as Sally did at the deli. It’s 32 years later, and we’re still as obsessed as ever.

In fact, this feels like the most relevant time to dress like we’re in the late ‘80s. High-waisted jeans with a croc belt and loafers? So 2021 of you, Meg Ryan. And it’s not just our rom-com queen whose outfits stole our hearts—some of Harry’s cozy looks landed on our list as well.

Here’s to singing “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top” and acquiring more cable knit sweaters than our closets can handle. Oh, and rewatching this movie for the 200th time.

1. The Central Park stroll look

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

 sweater | sweater (plus-size) | blazer | blazer (plus-size) | trousers | trousers (plus-size) | gloves | booties

It’s the season for wearing multiple layers, strolling through Central Park, and ordering Apple Pie a la Mode (heated, with the ice cream on the side)—AKA When Harry Met Sally season. Celebrate the occasion in the instantly recognizable outfit that Sally dons on the movie poster: a pair of pleated trousers, printed pullover, gray blazer, and bowler hat. This color palette features nearly every neutral color in existence, making it the perfect fall-weather uniform.

2. The mom jeans and turtleneck look

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

turtleneck | turtleneck (plus-size) | jeans | jeans (plus-size) | tote | belt | loafers | socks

Mom jeans and a white turtleneck might sound a little boring, but surprise! Meg Ryan turns a simple outfit into something simply adorable. The trick? Tucking in the shirt and incorporating a belt to accentuate the high-waisted look. Loafers and white socks are just the extra bit of charm any main character needs. There’s a reason #megryanfall is trending on TikTok.

3. The loungewear look we want to live in

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

fisherman’s sweatersweatpants | sweatpants (plus-size) | slippers

If this isn’t a whole mood, we don’t know what is. Harry Burns achieved peak coziness in this scene, and thankfully, we can all emulate it. Just cancel all plans, grab your favorite Stephen King novel, and pair some sweats with a fisherman’s sweater. A monochrome fit that’s as effortless as it looks? That is just like you, Harry. And if you must leave the house, you can always swap your sweats with black leggings and boots.

4. The diner look

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

cardigan | cardigan (plus-size) | button up | button up (plus-size) | beltshorts | shorts (plus-size) | knee-high socks | chunky loafers

Who knew that a cardigan, bermuda shorts, and knee-high socks would be the perfect attire for transitional weather (or a cross-country road trip with your inevitable soulmate)? Sally did, of course, just like she knew exactly how to order a chef salad.

5. The denim-on-denim look

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

denim shirtdenim shirt (plus-size) | blazer | blazer (plus-size) | belt | jeans | jeans (plus-size) | loafers

Before we address Sally’s impeccable-ness, let’s stop and appreciate Harry’s double denim moment. This is one of those menswear-inspired outfits you can put together with the basics you already own. Denim on denim isn’t always the easiest to pull off, but with a wool blazer, it’s instantly timeless.

6. The corduroy blazer look

Source: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

blazer | cable-knit sweater | sweater (plus-size) | tote | watch | jeans | jeans (plus-size) | booties

Too much pepper in your paprikash may be one thing, but too many blazers in your wardrobe is impossible. Sally sports several throughout the film, and while it’s difficult to choose a favorite, this chocolate corduroy blazer may beat out all the rest. Layered over a red cable knit sweater, it becomes the fall outfit. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: We’ll wear what she’s wearing.

I may be late to the party, but I now know why one highlighter in particular — Charlotte Tilbury’s Beauty Wand in Pinkgasm — has been sold out for months, is a favorite among influencers like Madison Beer, and has garnered a wait list of more than 50,000 people. But the wait for the product's grand return is nearing its end because it'll finally be available for purchase to wait list subscribers, brand partners, and members of the brand's Superstar program beginning Tuesday, October 26. Not to worry if you don't fall under any of these categories; it will also be open for purchase amongst all customers beginning Thursday, October 28.

Before getting my hands on this highlighter adored by so many, I thought a highlighter this popular would emit a glow that could be seen for miles. I'm talking from Midtown Manhattan to the Northern New Jersey suburbs (translation for all our non-tri-state area readers out there: super freaking far). However, Pinkgasm did anything but give the bright, neon lights of Times Square a run for their money.

In fact, this highlighter did the opposite. But don't get me wrong — it was even better than what I originally thought. Los Angeles-based makeup artist Robin Black's philosophy on highlighters pretty much summarizes how this beauty wand worked its magic on my face. "It has the added benefit of giving a dewy, fresh look to the skin and can help makeup look less makeup-y," she previously told Allure.

Due to the hype surrounding this product, I was anxious to get this highlighter on my face. Once the moment of truth came — that is, after buffing out the rosy-pink liquid formula with my Real Techniques Expert Face Makeup Brush — the pink pigment seemed to have disappeared… but not entirely. What remained was a very subtle hint of pink and some barely-even-there sparkles smattered on the high points of my cheeks and the bottom corners of my forehead.  I'm not really partial to base products with a vibrant color payoff and lots of sheen, so I was glad that this product didn't look as intense as it did straight out of the tube.

Contrary to its light-catching pink tube, this highlighter doesn't exactly scream blinded-by-the-city-lights glam; its subtlety makes it more suitable for everyday wear. Even though its radiance may not compare to the brightness of the sun's rays, you'll definitely notice a difference in your complexion's luminosity if you go without it. This highlighter's pink-meets-red hue also doubles as a blush for light and medium skin tones, and if you're always in a rush like me, you'll appreciate this product's multitasking abilities when time is of the essence.

You know that hair envy we all feel when we scroll through Pinterest or Instagram and see picture after picture of perfectly tousled locks? If only good hair days were so easy. That’s why we asked industry-leading hairstylist, Amanda Diedrich of Blohaute, to share her expert tips on making those lust-worthy hair Instagram pictures a reality. She shared with us six hair stylist tips for achieving soft, manageable, healthy hair that you will love regardless of hair type.

1. Go on a hair diet

Every good hairstyle begins with healthy hair. Think of your hair care routine like your makeup routine: Without a good foundation, it’s almost impossible to get a polished look. If your hair isn’t healthy, it’s much harder to achieve the trendy styles seen on many celebrities. Healthy hair gives you shine, volume, and is much more manageable.

Let’s start by adding a few of these tricks to your daily routine:

Eat an overall healthy, balanced diet

Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet of protein, carbs, and fats with all your micronutrients too. Too much sugar or caffeine can definitely affect the way your hair grows as well as its appearance.

Keep your hair moisturized

Hair can get really dry from heat styling, chemical processing treatments like relaxers and hair color, and too much time in the sun. Start by using a deep conditioning treatment or mask once or twice a week.

Olaplex

No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask

Our Beauty Editor’s current favorite moisturizing hair mask—it’s the magic of Olaplex, but actually makes your hair look better immediately.

Get rid of the build-up

Just like your skin, hair tends to hold onto a lot of product. Product build-up causes hair to get heavy and weighed down much faster, as well as lose that pretty shine. Introduce a clarifying shampoo to your routine to use once a week. Clarifying your hair will remove any excess build-up, but be sure to follow with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Anomoly

Clarifying Shampoo

This inexpensive detox shampoo removes build-up without stripping hair.

Try a cold shot

As cold as it may be outside, sometimes a hot shower isn’t always the best way to start your day. Try ending your warm shower by rinsing your hair for the last minute with cold water. This helps to close your cuticle, which will help reduce frizz and give you that glimmering shine.

2. Reach for the right products

Hair not cooperating? Many times the problem is simple: you’re using the wrong product for your hair type. If your hair is fine, it’s important to stick with light textures that won’t weight it down. Medium-to-thick hair should focus on adding moisture and styling products to manage their hair without over-doing it or causing build-up, while curly and coily hair types need lots of hydration and should use thick textures and rich products to achieve their desired look. Once you know your hair type, your porosity, and your curl pattern, choosing the right products is much easier.

3. Minimize heat-styling as much as possible

If possible, air-drying your hair as much as you can will impact the health of your hair over time, but there are ways to minimize blow drying as well as other heat-styling treatments like curling and straightening. Try creating an easy and fun hairstyle without even touching the blow dryer by adding a frizz-fighting serum or air dry cream to wet hair and comb through to distribute evenly.

If not blow-drying is out of the question, make sure to use a curl-defining cream if you’re a curly girl or a volumizing blow-dry cream with a heat protectant built-in to put your hair in a good place post-blow-dry so you don’t have to do extra styling.

Bondi Boost

Heat Protectant Spray

For textured hair, this is also a reason why protective styles are so good to lean on because they keep your hair in tip-top shape for longer so you can rely on heat tools less.

4. Embrace texture

Second-day hair is key, but it definitely needs a little zhuzhing. Embrace your natural hair and just add a little extra roughness to it with a dry texture spray. It’ll amp up whatever volume and body you already have, get rid of any unnecessary shine, and hold whatever style you opt for. Flip your head over and spray into hair and through roots. Flip back, and either brush it out or rough it up with your hands.

5. Add a spritz of perfume

Worried about the dirty hair smell? Spray your brush with your favorite fall or winter perfume and run the brush through your hair before you start the day. It’s the easiest way to make your hair seem ultra-alluring and sexy.

6. Don’t touch your hair too much

Now that your style is perfect, avoid the urge to flip it, touch it, and play with it all day (we know, it’s impossible). If you want your style to last and your hair to stay in the shiny zone versus looking greasy, touching it constantly will just encourage it to fall and take all that oil and moisture from your hands straight onto your hair. Once you have your perfect style, just rock it and let it be.
